Another History Lesson

Saturday started out with hotel breakfast (to curb the effects of last nite). Afterwards, headed straight to the Kölner Dom. For the last seven days, all I have heard is “You must go to the Dom” and “You can’t miss the Dom”. It is a massive Gothic church in the middle of the city, the largest in Northern Europe. Taking over 600 years to complete (from 1248-1880), it sustained hits by aeriel bombs during World War II, and is constantly under repair, even to this day.

One can climb climb the 509 steps of the spiral staircase to the top. I chose not to in fear of becoming dizzy.

Kölner Dom

After the Dom, I headed to two nearby museums.

The Römisch-Germanisches Museum, which held a bunch of archaeological artifacts including stones, tools, glass containers, and jewelry.

Museum Ludwig was definitely my favorite of the two. I love modern art! My favorite floor was the “pop art” floor, however really loved what they had by Picasso and Dali.

And how weird is it to look at a painting (Picasso) titled Two Nudes, Musketeer, and Boy with Wreath of Flowers?

I must admit, I never really enjoyed history class. Mostly because I couldn’t just add a few numbers together or solve a problem in order to get an answer. I have met so many people and heard so many stories in the last couple months, that I can’t keep it all straight. I barely can remember names of the people I have met! Everyone is so willing to share with me what they know about the history and the culture of the cities I’ve visited. And because of that this week and my adventures in Ireland have been very, very interesting, and it makes me want to learn more! Thank you to all my “tour guides”!
