Tentative travel plans for my two weeks off from work:
- Fly to south of France
- Get some vitamin D: relax on beach in Nice
- Day trip to Monaco, Saint Tropez, and/or Cannes
- Train from Nice to Paris
- Hit up the tourist traps in Paris
- Train to Rome
- Hit up the tourist traps in Rome
- Train to Berlin
- Hit up the tourist traps in Berlin
- Fly home
- Sink into my own bed/couch
And hopefully a few stops in between there.
Goal: To relax, experience new cultures, and find a way to incorporate the one French phrase I remember into everyday conversation: “Est ce que je peux tailler mon crayon?”

OK, I’m confused. I know no French, but according to Google’s translator, your phrase means “Do I prune my pencil”. Either the translator is mixed up or your French isn’t quite what it used to be…or the French do strange things with pencils.
Or… I didn’t have a qualified French teacher. I was always told it meant “May I sharpen my pencil?” It has been several years since I’ve needed to use that in a real world situation (i.e. a classroom) so maybe I’m mis-remembering. Either way, it could be interesting to use that in everyday conversation outside the classroom.
I’m going to make my students say that phrase in my classroom the next time they need their pencil sharpened. Now I just have to figure out how to say it!
